As the family of Nolan Xavier Wells mourns the 18-year-old's death, their community is now rallying around them — while investigators look into a viral video that may provide clues about what happened on Horn Island.
A GoFundMe launched by family friend Allayah Denis has raised more than $100,000 in less than 24 hours.
"Nolan Xavier Wells was a beloved son, grandson, brother, friend and teammate whose life touched so many people," Denis wrote. "While no words can ease the pain of this unimaginable loss, we are deeply grateful for every person who searched, prayed, shared his story, and stood beside our family during these difficult days."
According to Denis, the funds will go toward funeral and memorial costs, celebration of life services, and any additional expenses associated with honoring Nolan's memory, with any surplus going directly to his family.
His mother, Christine Wonsley, confirmed on Facebook that the GoFundMe is the only official one and asked for privacy as she and Nolan's father, Elmore Wonsley, grieve their son.
Nolan's friends have also flooded social media with tributes. "Words can't even describe how I feel about this let alone all the people who got the chance to know this dude and experience how this man could impact a room," one friend wrote, per TMZ. "I pray that God will shelter his family as they go through this. Thank you for all the memories and good times we had together man. I love you forever my brother Nolan."
Meanwhile, investigators are examining a viral video circulating online that may provide additional information about Nolan's final hours.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter told TMZ that his office is aware of a viral video circulating online that appears to show a tense confrontation involving several people near the shoreline of Horn Island on the Fourth of July. Investigators are actively looking into the footage as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have not verified the authenticity of the video or confirmed whether anyone seen in it has any connection to Nolan's death.
The cause and manner of Nolan's death have not yet been publicly released.
Investigators have asked anyone who spoke with Nolan on Horn Island on July 4 or who has information about his final known movements to contact authorities.
