A fast food employee who called his Black co-worker the N-word was fired after his colleague's family showed up to their workplace demanding accountability.
The incident was captured in a series of TikTok videos shared by @maahdukes, the worker's aunt. "Uncle Rick" led the charge in calling for justice for his niece, who was called a racial slur by her co-worker at Café Rio, a fast food restaurant.
“You need to have that talk, or I’ll have that talk. Figure it out quickly,” Rick told the manager. “I’ma wait around… I want him to call me that.”
The family said they immediately headed to the restaurant after their niece informed them of the incident through their group chat.
“Everybody in their slides, buddy ain’t got no shirt on. Y’all really said, ‘let’s ride RIGHT NOW,’” one TikTok user commented.
Video shows the employee who allegedly hurled the slur, identified as Deegan, packing food before he was fired.
“The moment he knew he F’d up,” the co-worker's aunt captioned the clip. “Taking his time before he gets walked off his job for calling my niece the N-word.”
In another video, Rick appeared to be following up with the manager to make sure the employee was held accountable for the slur.
“Imma trust you,” Rick said to the manager as they shook hands.
While many people supported the family's act of unity, some social media users questioned whether it was appropriate for them to intervene in the situation.
“Family sticks together. We’ve been teaching our kids since they were young. We are all we got, and we have got to stick together. When one rides, we all ride," the co-worker's aunt said in response.
