A man has been banned by the Chicago White Sox and the MLB indefinitely after he heckled an opposing player over his late mother, per CBS Sports.
On Tuesday (June 24), Arizona Diamondbacks player Ketel Marte was left in tears after a fan made a derogatory remark about his mother during a White Sox game in Chicago. Marte's mother died in a car accident in 2017.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo comforted Marte as he cried on the field.
"I just reacted as a dad would when I went out to change pitchers," Lovullo said after the game. "I could see he was sobbing. It hurt.
"(I told him), 'I love you and I'm with you and we're all together and you're not alone. No matter what happens, no matter what was said or what you heard, that guy is an idiot. It shouldn't have an impact on you.'"
The White Sox ejected the man, an unidentified 22-year-old, after he made the comment. According to a team spokesperson, the man was “very apologetic and remorseful," admitting that his remarks were inappropriate.
The MLB announced Wednesday (June 25) that the heckler was banned from all MLB stadiums. During Wednesday's game, the White Sox also showed their support for Marte, displaying messages that read "Baseball is family" and "the White Sox community supports Ketel Marte."
