Community members are seeking justice after a 23-year-old Black transgender woman was shot and killed in Milwaukee, per Fox 6.
The fatal shooting of Amyri Dior, 23, unfolded around 12:30 a.m. on Friday near 95th and Brown Deer.
Police are still looking for the suspected shooter, and no arrests have been made in connection to the case.
It's unclear what led to the shooting. Family members believe that her death is a part of the growing violence against transgender people. In a statement, the family encouraged others to continue to "live in the truth."
"Live in the truth y’all," Dior’s mother, Perriona Williams, said. "I just want to tell everybody to live in the truth. It doesn’t matter who you are, just open up, be an open book, so your family can know who you are and be able to love you for who you are."
Dior's cousin, Jakiala Jenkins, described the victim as a "good soul" who was "always truthful with her life."
"We just need some type of understanding, of closure," Jenkins said. "We just want all trans [people] to stay safe. Know that you are loved."
In the wake of Dior's death, local leaders gathered at the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center to discuss ways to protect transgender people against such senseless violence.
“There are lives under attack, and it’s very blatant that they are under attack,” Matt Hogans, a leader with Black Pride MKE, said.
