A white former police detective who was facing federal charges in connection to the sexual assault of two Black women in Kansas City was found dead in an apparent suicide.
According to PEOPLE, 71-year-old retired detective Roger Golubski, who was soon scheduled to begin trial for the sexual assault allegations, died of a gunshot wound at his home in Edwardsville on Monday (December 2).
Authorities found Golubski on the back porch of his home after a neighbor called 911. According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, there were no immediate signs of foul play.
In September 2022, Golubski was arrested after a federal grand jury indicted him on six counts related to the rape of two women while he was working for the Kansas City Police Department. Golubski allegedly raped both women and forced them to perform oral sex on him in his vehicle and at their homes between 1998 and 2002, according to the federal indictment.
Golubski's indictment followed an FBI probe into allegations that he sexually assaulted Black women in Kansas City and traded drugs for information during criminal investigations. The investigation was backed by Black activists and Jay-Z's Team Roc, who had previously called for a wider probe into the Kansas City Police Department.
Golubski had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
After Golubski was found dead, federal prosecutors requested U.S. District Judge Toby Crouse drop his charges.
“This matter involved extremely serious charges, and it is always difficult when a case is unable to be fully and fairly heard in a public trial and weighed and determined by a jury,” Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Civil Rights Division and U.S. Attorney Kate E. Brubacher for the District of Kansas said in a statement. “The proceedings in this case may be over, but its lasting impact on all the individuals and families involved remains. We wish them peace and the opportunity for healing as they come to terms with this development and ask that they all be treated with respect and their privacy respected.”
