A D.C. teenager has been sentenced for her role in the fatal beating of a 64-year-old disabled man, per NBC Washington.
Reggie Brown, 64, was walking back to his apartment in October 2023 when a man and five girls, ages 12 to 15, randomly approached him and allegedly began attacking him in the street.
Video shows a group of girls chasing Brown down an alley before they stomped on his head and used his belt to beat him, according to investigators. The group allegedly laughed at Brown as he was bleeding from his head.
“He’s leaking!” one of the girls allegedly said.
Brown was later found dead on the street. According to an autopsy, Brown died of blunt force trauma.
Police said Brown, who weighed just 110 pounds, was disabled, battling cancer, and had mental health issues.
Two of the attackers, ages 13 and 14, were found guilty of several charges, including second-degree murder, on Monday (November 18). Three of the girls pleaded guilty in connection to the attack, including one who said the group bombarded the man because they were bored.
A 14-year-old girl, who prosecutors said kicked Brown a few times in the shoulder then stood back, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit assault. She was sentenced to a juvenile facility until she turns 18.
"The goal of the juvenile justice system is rehabilitation, not punishment,” the judge said. “I know that may not be what the [victim's] family wants to hear."
Defense lawyers told the judge that the 14-year-old girl expressed remorse, saying “I feel bad because he was just an old man ... He had a family. I think about him every day."
