A Michigan man is facing charges after he attacked a postal worker over Kamala Harris ads he found in his mail.
61-year-old Russell Frank Valleau was charged with ethnic intimidation and assault after police said he pulled a knife and hurled slurs at a postal worker, per Fox 2 Detroit.
According to the Farmington Hills Police Department, the victim was delivering mail to Valleau's home on Thursday (September 26) when he approached her United States Postal Service vehicle. Police said an intoxicated Valleau hurled racist and derogatory remarks about Harris and the postal worker after he found ads for the vice president in his mail.
Valleau allegedly told the worker he didn't want that "Black b***h" in his mailbox before calling the carrier herself a "Black b****."
Police said the man then lunged at the victim with a knife, and she pepper sprayed him in response.
"In this highly charged political moment, everyone has a right to their political opinion and vote. Whatever our political beliefs, no one should be assaulted or threatened because of their race, or for doing their job. Hate crimes impact all of us, and we will vigorously pursue all such cases," Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in a statement.
Valleau fled the scene before police found him in a neighbor's yard and arrested him.
"The Farmington Hills Police Department is dedicated to preventing attacks based on race, gender or political affiliation," Chief Jeff King said in a statement. "Such conduct is not tolerated in this great community and the Farmington Hills Police Department will use every resource to bring offenders to justice, ensuring the community remains a safe and welcoming place for all people."
