A 13-year-old girl was killed as she was walking to meet a friend in her apartment complex.
According to Fox 8, 28-year-old Jerry Dorisme was arrested Thursday (July 11) on charges of first-degree murder in connection to the death of Rose Dieujuste, 13.
The arrest came after Rose was found stabbed and partially clothed in a utility closet on July 4. She was taken to a hospital where she later died.
“Rose was senselessly and brutally murdered on July 4th in the apartment complex where she lived,” Orange County Sheriff John Mina said in a statement.
Mina said Rose was walking to her friend's unit in another building at the same apartment complex when she was followed by Dorisme.
“Her friend found Rose’s cell phone and shoes in the staircase in that apartment building and reached out to Rose’s family. A family member was knocking on doors to see if they could find Rose,” Mina said.
Surveillance video from the apartment complex showed Dorisme walking a distance behind Rose. Detectives also found packaging from a kitchen knife near the teen's body in the utility closet. More footage from a nearby store showed Dorisme purchasing what police believe was the same knife.
Police are still investigating to determine if the teenager was sexually assaulted.
“We can’t even imagine the pain and anguish that Rose’s family and loved ones are going through right now,” Mina said.
